Sisters Oregon

With a definitive feel for the "Old West", Sisters Oregon is a fitting showcase amid the natural beauty of the area. Settlers in the Willamette Valley on the west side of the Cascades discovered what the Native Americans already knew, a passage through the Santiam Pass to the high desert country of what is now Central Oregon. Those seeking the riches of the gold mines in Eastern Oregon and Idaho used this route extensively. Trails became wagon roads, also used by sheepherders.

Shortly after the turn of the century, a plat was filed to create the town of Sisters, named for the Three Sisters Mountains on the southwest skyline. Business began to boom, and by the 1930's lumber production was the primary industry. There was a time when Sisters produced a lot of lumber, milled from those same pine forests surrounding the area. But by the 1960's, the last of the lumber mills closed and Sisters began to build for a new future.

As Oregon's highways became better and better, Sisters became known as the gateway to the Cascades. The town embraced it's 1880's theme style and adopted it today.

The downtown area of Sisters is unique and has a variety of great specialty shops, art galleries, and fabulous places to dine.

Sisters will leave a memorable experience for years to come. Towering in the backdrop are mountain peaks towering more than 10,000 feet. The Three Sisters, Faith, Hope and Charity, give Sisters its name and some say, its identity. Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Washington, Three Fingered Jack and Broken Top all create and incredible skyline viewable from Sisters.

The Deschutes National Forest is just on the edge of town, with forests of Ponderosa Pine that seem to go on for miles and miles with nearby crystal clear lakes and streams. To the east of Sisters is the high desert, to the west is located the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, an unforgettable view.

Recreation abounds around the town, with miles and miles of hiking trails through the nearly 1.6 million acres of the National Forest.
